Weather favors razor clam diggers over anglers Posted by glock on Friday, February 25, 2005 (12:46:14) (1148 reads)

For many Northwest anglers, the recent string of clear, cold days has overstayed its welcome. Many are hoping for warmer temperatures – and some rain – to reenergize fishing for species including sturgeon and steelhead.
In eastern Washington, fisheries managers are concerned that lingering ice could put the chill on the early eastside trout opener set for March 1.
“Once this ice thaws, most of the early-opening lakes will offer good rainbow trout fishing and some will be downright exceptional,” said Jeff Korth, a district biologist for the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) in Moses Lake.
But how long will anglers have to wait?
On the lower Columbia River, cold weather has slowed the sturgeon bite, and fishers are still waiting for the smelt to arrive. Low, gin-clear waters have also made steelhead fishing a tricky proposition on the Olympic Peninsula.
Then again, current weather conditions are just about perfect for digging razor clams, said Dan Ayres, WDFW coastal shellfish manager. In fact, Ayres is hoping for more of the same during the next dig, tentatively set for March 6, 7 and 8 on evening tides.
“Cold weather isn’t a big factor for razor clam enthusiasts, who dig throughout the winter months,” Ayres said. “Rain is a bigger problem, because it fills in the `show holes’ that let people know where to dig.”
Ayres said final word on the March razor clam will be announced by Feb. 28, once the last round of tests have been conducted to make sure the clams are safe to eat.
Weather aside, anglers have been pursuing blackmouth around Puget Sound with mixed success, while spring chinook are just beginning to show in the lower Columbia River. Those looking for a preview of this year’s salmon-fishing prospects are invited to attend a public meeting March 1, when WDFW will present its initial forecasts salmon returns for 2005. The meeting, which kicks off the annual season-setting process for salmon fisheries, is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the auditorium of Office Building 2 at 1115 Washington St. on the Capitol Campus in Olympia.
