Rod guide repair

[ Administration ]
Well one of my guides was bent and one was broke, due to a accident that involved my pole.
So I bought a new lamiglas pole and decided that I needed to learn to fix poles so that if i break them I don't have to fork out big bucks for a new pole every time a guide gets messed up.

So, I got started in the garage with
  • a homemade rod stand
  • a sewing machine for wrapping motor
  • a 12 volt motor for drying the flex coat
  • flex coat 2 part cover
  • thread size "D"
  • 2 new guides
  • razor knife
  • masking tape

before
so I started with a rod and this is what the original guide looked like
stripped
I stripped the guide off with a razor knife and removed all the previous thread so that it was down to the blank, be careful not to damage the blank in anyway.
machine
I built a rod stand with a sewing machine motor attached to do the rod wrapping this allowed me to control the thread while the rod spun at a controlled speed.
wrap start
now I was ready to start the bottom wrap, I ran the thread from the bottom to the top of the pole and taped it down then gently wrapped over the string to hold the start string in place after a 5 or 6 wraps i cut the string and positioned it by moving the wraps with my thumbs till i had the wraps where i wanted to begin the bottom wrap.
Tie off
once the thread wrap was turned onto the rod and kept tight along the way, I used a piece of mono fishing line and set it so the loop was facing the end where the wrapping would end and wrapped over the top of it for 5 or 6 wraps, this allowed me to run the thread through the fishing line and then pull it out and cinch off the wrap, this would keep the wrap tight till it was time to flex wrap it.
wraps done
Once the wraps where done they are ready for flex coat to be applied. I would recommend color preserver as well at this point in time.
drying setup at this point in time I changed motors from the sewing machine to this 12 volt motor that turns a much slower RPM, after applying the flex coat the rod must stay turning to prevent the flex coat (lacquer) from sagging this is VERY IMPORTANT, apply flex coat with a good paint brush in a very thin coat and allow to spin for 4 to 6 hours at least to set up up well.
guide set up Once the bottom layer has set up and dried with the flex coat you are now ready to set the guide, I marked my position by measuring the amount of area that I threaded for the bottom wrap and then divided it in 2 this gave me center and I used fishing line from the pole tip to reel seat to find the center line so that the guides would be straight. I marked with black sharpie .
guide set up
and set the guide by taping down the bottom side so that I could wrap the top guide first and started the thread the same way I did the bottom wrap and after i wrapped the top side of the eye i tied it off the same way as the bottom wrap.
guide tied on
then proceeded to the bottom guide foot and duplicated the process there as well. Now it is ready for flex coat. again brush it on thin and let the pole spin on a low RPM motor (6-10 rpm is fine)

finished

After dying you are left with your finished product I know that my replacements don't match what was there I probably should have switched to black thread for the guides for a little nice finish, I am very happy how it turned out other than that.

Please email me or send me a private message if I can answer any questions for you.

Although my home machine worked well I will be buying a rod wrapper before I do this again
