The Brown Trout
Posted by glock on Monday, February 02, 2004 (23:32:19) (1856 reads)
Once the river slows a bit I plan on spending time in search of the Brown trout as well as Steelhead.
The Touchet River can reward you with a fat brown trout. We know that many articles have been written lately about the Touchet River. This river is usually a gentle river with good, if not great, reward for the fly fishing angler for several species of trout. If you were not aware, the Touchet River is currently open for brown trout. BROWN TROUT Nov. 1-Apr. 15 No min. size. Daily limit 2 Hatchery STEELHEAD and BROWN
TROUT combined. Barbless hooks required.
You can tell a brown trout from the following. A brown trout's back is brown or olive with large spots. Sides are light brown to
yellowish with large dark spots surrounded by halos of blue-gray. The tail has few
spots.
Brown trout spawn in late autumn to early winter in shallow, gravelly waters. The female digs the redd where she lays about 2000 eggs. This species is carnivorous and feed on insects, crustaceans especially crayfish, molluscs, salamanders, frogs and rodents.
The average length of the brown trout is 16 to 18 inches and generally they weigh only a few pounds. I have heard of brown trout being caught on the Touchet as large as 22".
If you have had success fishing for browns, please send us a message or post and let us know.
